Montgomery Optometrists offer alternative to laser eye surgery

April 2008

While the press and the airwaves are full of offers for laser eye surgery, East Lothian-based Montgomery Optometrists are one of the few opticians providing a radical new treatment based on using contact lenses to remould the cornea. The patient wears precision Gas Permeable lenses to reshape the cornea while they are asleep, so that they have perfect vision during the daytime, without any further need for spectacles or contact lenses. It is a painless, convenient, low risk and non-surgical alternative to laser eye treatment.

Brian Montgomery says:

East Lothian-based Montgomery Optometrists can provide Nocturnal™ contact lenses as a radical new alternative to laser eye surgery. Margaret Goldberg, one of the owners of Montgomery's, is pictured here outside the recently revamped Tranent practice.

"Margaret Goldberg and I have treated nearly 40 people with Nocturnal™ contact lenses over the last two years. The success rate is similar to laser eye surgery with the advantages that it is non-surgical, painless and reversible. It costs significantly less than laser eye surgery and the price of the lenses is on a par with normal contact lenses.

"The fitting procedure is also similar to conventional contact lenses. Using some clever software, a corneal topographer maps the exact contours of the eye using thousands of points of reference. This data is then used to produce individually tailored lenses to suit the patient's precise needs."

'Orthokeratology', the name of this revolutionary new eye treatment, has in fact been around for some 40 years, but has only recently come into its own as a result of advances in corneal topographers, lens materials and manufacturing.

James Anthony, a director at Scotlens Ltd. in Linlithgow who developed and manufacture Nocturnal™ contact lenses, adds:

"Nocturnal™ use complex reverse geometry lenses to reshape the cornea of the eye while you sleep. So when you wake up your Nocturnals™ will have corrected the focusing power of your eyes, which means that you don’t have to wear spectacles or contact lenses during the day.

"We find that Nocturnals™ offer huge benefits to certain people where spectacles or contact lenses can be inconvenient, such as those working in air conditioned offices, diving and sports. Nocturnals™ are excellent for an active lifestyle.

"Nocturnals™ can also be worn by teenagers, particularly if they play a lot of sport. It is a safe alternative to laser treatment, and has proved very successful in giving them good vision."

Montgomery Optometrists has recently tied up with Kodak Lens enabling them to offer Kodak's technologically advanced lenses, and has practices in Haddington (01620 826000), Tranent (01875 612675), Prestonpans (01875 812680) and Musselburgh (0131 665 6900).
