New schoolbag, new trainers, new uniform ... but have you had your child's eyes tested this summer?

July 2009

The autumn term is approaching and as you fill your child's new schoolbag with "essentials", are you sure you're not forgetting something vital?

Children's eyes are the windows through which they see the world and they are responsible for four fifths of all the information their brains receive*, yet many have never been to an opticians to have their eyes checked.

If children are having difficulties seeing what is in their books or is on the board or computer screen, their learning is likely to suffer, and so Montgomery Optometrists Kodak Lens Vision Centres in Musselburgh, Prestonpans, Tranent and Haddington are urging parents to take their child for a free eye test this summer.

"A child's visual system is fully developed by the age of eight, and so it is important to detect things such as lazy eyes or squints before this to have the best chance of correction. The school holidays are the ideal time to have your child's eyes tested, in preparation for the school year ahead," says Brian Montgomery, joint owner of Montgomery Optometrists Kodak Lens Vision Centres.

It is advised that children should have their eyes tested at least once every year from the age of 3 to 16, or even earlier if you have particular concerns about their vision.
